How To URL Redirect

URL redirection is known as URL forwarding as well.

There’s different types of URL redirection.  The two main URL redirect versions are “301” and “302”.  It’s important to know what these URL redirect types mean and when you should use them before we get into the steps for How To URL Redirect.

A 301 redirect is also known as a permanent redirect.  You want to use the 301 redirect for search engine optimization reasons.  A 301 redirect signals to search engines that any backlink or other credit should be transferred to the new site.

A 302 redirect is a temporary redirect.  It makes it so that the URL will resolve to the new website, but any “link credit” will not.

How To URL Redirect:

If you’re redirecting one domain to another, you can do this URL redirect from the place you bought your domain from.  For Example, at GoDaddy –

1 – login

2 – click on my account

3 – click on view domain manager

4 – click on the domain name you want to redirect

5 – click on the forward button and choose forward domain

6 – paste in the URL you want the domain to forward to, and click OK

Note this may take a half an hour to redirect.

You can URL Redirect using .htaccess when you’re using an Apache web server.  This is sample code for a 301 redirect –

Redirect permanent /oldurlpage.html http://www.newurl.com

Redirect 301  /oldurlpage.html http://www.newurl.com

I strongly suggest you don’t attempt to modify your .htaccess file unless you’re a seasoned coder or webmaster.  The file is tricky, and a mess-up can cause your site to lose a lot of traffic.

There’s also ways to accomplish a redirect via JavaScripts or Frame redirects or other methods.  Again, I don’t recommend you try these if you haven’t coded before.  Here’s a reference to get more details on these mentioned techniques.

Consider getting hosting from a web host like hostmonster technical account features for your next website.  They have excellent technical support, and may even do a URL direct for you.
